Hello! Sat Sri Akal!

Salaam! Namaste!

Mine is a story of a girl who grew up reading Victorian literature and decided to come and study in the UK to explore the country that was etched in her mind since childhood. As life had better plans, I found love and stayed on. Hayes/Southall is now home, where I have raised a beautiful family and have enjoyed a fulfilling career as a media person.

I have always been a people's person, grounded in community concerns, so getting into politics was a natural progression. I decided to take part in active politics because I was disheartened to see that the political narrative was turning increasingly divisive, unethical and moving away from everyday people's concerns.

I am honoured and privileged to represent the diverse communities of Wood End Ward, Hayes, in London Borough of Hillingdon, since May 2022 when I got elected as a Labour Party councillor. I continue to work tirelessly for all my residents helping them with their concerns ranging from housing to anti-social behaviour, potholes to graffiti, and flytipping to road safety. I am proud to have contributed towards bringing about a positive change in the council's consultation process to support geographical parity. I have a sterling record of raising residents' concerns in the council chamber.

I am also a multi-platform journalist, who has worked with print, digital, radio and TV mediums, specialising in community and Indian diaspora content. A Master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, my work as Head of News and Programming Content for Southall-based Akash Radio, and as news editor and journalist for India’s leading English language newspapers The Times of India and The Indian Express, have kept me deeply rooted into public affairs. Further, MA in Film and Communications led me to TV shows ‘Kamal in Konversation’ and ‘Khas Galbaat’ for UK-based channels. I am also part of the ITV's pool of freelance journalists. I was the Editor-in-Chief of quarterly diaspora magazine "The Celebrations."

Organising large-scale community events and helping many others, is one of the other hats I wear with confidence. I have also worked with charitable and aid organisations. Community work is second nature. A lot of my Inter-faith work is a result is a result of MA in Comparative Study of World Religions. I love working with babies and toddlers and have PGCE in Early Years from UCL. My other passions include women empowerment, youth engagement and climate justice.

And, books and travel are my other love!

Love,

Kamal Preet Kaur

(MMC, MFC, MA, PGCE)
